Magic Star Trek Brazen Bluff: a Two-Mana Red Counterspell Alternative
Wargamer flags Brazen Bluff, a red instant that makes the opponent exile their spell or hand you a free noncreature spell. Red rarely gets an answer to spells, so this is a rare one.
Red gets something that looks like a counterspell in the Magic: The Gathering Star Trek set, and it works through a bluff. Brazen Bluff is a two-mana red instant, according to Wargamer's write-up of the card.
How Brazen Bluff Works
When you target an opponent's spell, they choose one of two outcomes:
- They exile their own unresolved spell from the stack.
- You cast any noncreature spell from your hand for free.
There are limits on both sides. Brazen Bluff can only target noncreature spells, and the spell you cast for free must also be a noncreature spell.
The card is a nod to the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "The Corbomite Maneuver". In it, Captain Kirk bluffs his way out of a battle by pretending the Enterprise has a secret weapon.
Brazen Bluff Versus Negate
Wargamer calls it a worse version of Negate. It is useless when you have no other cards in hand, since there is nothing to cast for free.
Still, mono red is a colour that traditionally does not get counterspells.
TCGKing's take: the card is a threat only as long as your hand backs it up. A bluff with an empty hand is just a tax on your opponent's patience, and the card is honest about that.
Brazen Bluff in Commander
Wargamer rates Brazen Bluff as a strong Commander card because it is versatile and creates social interaction at the table. The author suggests Worldfire as a fun inclusion alongside it.
The rules help the bluff along. A player may show hidden information they have access to, such as revealing the card they plan to cast with Brazen Bluff to pressure the opponent.
Other Star Trek Commander coverage includes the Mardu Klingon Fury decklist.
