MTG Star Trek Play Boosters: Sheoldred Tops Chases at $88
A ranking of chase cards in MTG Star Trek Play Boosters puts Sheoldred, The Apocalypse (Benedict Cucumberpatch version) first, with a cheapest version of $88, the most valuable card obtainable from a regular booster. Minamo, School at Water's Edge follows at $60, then Bruvac, the Gradiloquent (shown as Spock) at $45 and Shizo, Death's Storehouse at $37. MTG Star Trek is Magic: The Gathering's latest Universes Beyond set, one week away as of the article, with prerelease events starting the following day. The ranking covers only regular cards and treatments found in Play Boosters, not Collector Boosters, where the top pull is almost certainly a card signed by Patrick Stewart. Exact prices are omitted for new cards because they are expected to fluctuate; for the stardate reprint cards, the price given is the cheapest currently available version.
Bruvac was previously released only in Jumpstart, Ravnica Remastered and Secret Lair. Minamo is described as a cEDH staple, and Shizo is a Terran Throne Room reskin that references the Echoverse.
Among the new cards, Captain Jean-Luc Picard is a mono-white commander that creates crew members and, once he has enough of them, can put spacecraft into play already stationed. He has synergy with The Seriema, an Edge of Eternity card: if Picard is hit with removal, tapping him and six officers puts it into play and makes him indestructible. The article attributes his popularity partly to Patrick Stewart's death the previous week, comparing it to the boost seen with Optimus Prime.
LCARS Shocklands are full-art, textless versions of shock lands in the set, so players must remember whether they enter untapped by paying 2 life.
Dr. Beverly Crusher, a three-mana card with a new doubler effect, ranks lowest on the list and is expected to drop in price. She doubles triggers that happen when life is gained, but not the life gained itself or abilities that check whether life was gained in a turn.
